AnkiPilot Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 16, 2026
AnkiPilot helps users create reviewed Anki cards from selected text, webpage context, and optional study notes. This policy summarizes what the extension is designed to handle.
Information You Choose to Send
AnkiPilot runs no server and has no accounts. When you generate cards with your own API key, your browser sends the text you selected, your notes, and your model settings straight to your provider: OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google. When you generate with a local model through Ollama, generation requests stay on your computer. On UWorld and AMBOSS pages, AnkiPilot reads only the question ID and generates cards with a local model only. On ordinary pages, requesting image transcription or image-based generation sends the image directly to your chosen provider or local model. Optional attachments go to Anki media and may sync with Anki. Question-bank pages require typed notes and disable image capture and dictation.
Local Storage
The extension stores settings such as selected provider, model, deck defaults, note-type defaults, tags, and optional encrypted API keys in browser storage. Browser sync may synchronize settings and encrypted keys between your devices. The encryption password is stored in the profile too; profile access may permit key decryption. Anki cards are added to your local Anki profile through AnkiConnect. Dictation uses browser/OS speech recognition and may involve remote speech processing.
Third-Party Services
AnkiPilot may interact with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google AI, Ollama on your own computer, and AnkiConnect on localhost. These services have their own terms and privacy policies.
Website email updates
This section covers only the email signup form on this website. The AnkiPilot extension itself collects nothing for the developer: it runs no server and receives nothing. If you sign up for update emails here, your email address, and your medical school if you choose to give it, are collected through Google Forms into the developer's Google account. They are used only to send AnkiPilot update emails, and they are never sold or shared with anyone else. You can be removed from the list at any time by emailing aaronge2020@gmail.com.
Your Control
You review generated cards before adding them to Anki. You can switch AI providers, remove your keys and settings from browser storage, and delete generated cards from Anki.
