Set up AnkiPilot

AnkiPilot needs Chrome, Anki, AnkiConnect, and either your own AI API key (OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google) or a local model running through Ollama. Keep Anki open during card sync.

New to AnkiPilot? The setup guide walks through every step with a short recording of the real screens.

Add to Chrome ยท Free

1. Install AnkiConnect

  1. Open Anki.
  2. Go to Tools > Add-ons > Get Add-ons...
  3. Enter code 2055492159 and restart Anki.
  4. Keep Anki open while adding cards from the extension.

2. Confirm AnkiConnect config

If AnkiPilot cannot connect, open the AnkiConnect add-on config and allow localhost plus your extension origin. Replace YOUR_EXTENSION_ID with the ID shown on chrome://extensions.

{
  "apiKey": null,
  "webBindAddress": "127.0.0.1",
  "webBindPort": 8765,
  "webCorsOriginList": [
    "http://localhost/*",
    "chrome-extension://YOUR_EXTENSION_ID/*"
  ]
}

If you set an AnkiConnect API key, copy that same key into AnkiPilot. The key comes from your AnkiConnect add-on config; Anki itself does not create one automatically.

3. Choose AI access

Open AI access in the popup. Choose OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google, paste your own provider API key, then click Validate. Each provider's key is saved separately. Provider usage charges are paid directly to that provider; AnkiPilot is freeware and has no account or paid plan.

For local generation, install Ollama from ollama.com and keep it running. In AnkiPilot, choose Local model (Ollama). The popup suggests Qwen3.5 9B and shows the exact ollama pull command to copy and run; a smaller Qwen3.5 4B option is there if the 9B download is too large. Click Find installed models, pick your model, and click Test local model. A pass turns on Use this local model for you. Leave the address as http://127.0.0.1:11434. If the test cannot connect, open Ollama not connecting? in the popup, run the startup command it shows for your system, and leave that terminal window open.

On UWorld and AMBOSS, only the question ID is read. Type your own missed-concept note; generation requires the local model. Source extraction, screenshots, and dictation are disabled on those pages.

4. Use the Card Builder

  1. Highlight study text, or open a supported question-bank page.
  2. Open AnkiPilot and choose Open Anki Card Builder.
  3. Generated cards land in the panel's Review Queue. Read each draft, then click Accept to add that one card to Anki, or Reject to drop it. Nothing reaches Anki until you accept a card.
  4. Accepted cards collect under Added Cards, and the panel confirms each one: "Card added to Default."

Quick diagnostics

  • Anki desktop is open before you load decks.
  • AnkiConnect is installed and restarted after installation.
  • The extension origin is allowed in AnkiConnect config.
  • Your provider key is validated in the popup, or your local model is enabled and Ollama is running.
